The Museum calling Artist project is the result of a collaboration between MiBACT (Ministry for Culture and Tourism) and AMACI (Association of Italian Contemporary Art Museums), with the aim of actively supporting the contemporary art scene in Italy by commissioning new works from Italian artists, which are then presented within the museum system.

For the project’s first edition, the directors of the AMACI association have chosen to commission the execution of a new work from twins Gianluca and Massimiliano De Serio (Turin, 1978). For a number of years, the twins have combined their work as visual artists with a career in filmmaking in a constant striving for balance between photography, in which they are past masters, and their artistic work.

This “summons” led to the production of their film, Un Ritorno (A Return) created during a moment of creative crisis for the artists and from their need to understand the reasons for it and thus break through the block. The pair of artists become subject and object of an experiment in simultaneous hypnosis, and in this state talk and film each other, linking the discourse with childhood memories right back to the moment before birth in a process of progressive regression without the mediation of narrative.

Un Ritorno seeks to bring to completion the transfer of the crisis from external (creative) to internal (dimension of identity) through an interlocking approach focusing on the normally invisible area that is the unconscious. The subjects of the film are themselves, their being twins, their speaking and looking at what is effectively a live mirror – says Beatrice Merz – They are the doubling, the start of a multiplication in which arises the doubt of the other in oneself.
