Event organized on the occasion of the 16th Italian Contemporary Art Day, promoted by the Association of Italian Contemporary Art Museums (AMACI), with the support of the General Direction of Contemporary Creativity of MiBACT, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

The Italian Institutes of Culture abroad are collaborating in the celebration of this Day, organizing between 5 and 11 December 2020 events aimed at promoting Italian contemporary art in the world and creating contacts and exchanges of ideas between Italian and international artists, encouraging the sharing of experiences and projects.

The Italian Cultural Institute Abu Dhabi present the webinar Contemporary art between Italy and the United Arab Emirates: a glance at the present, between innovation and tradition, that will take place on 10 December at 1 p.m. GST, 10:00 Italian time.
The meeting aims, on the one hand, to present a new generation of Italian painters in the United Arab Emirates, a country that represents a highly interesting crossroads of cultures and is on the way to becoming an increasingly important cultural pole on a global level; on the other hand, we aim at highlighting the effervescent artistic panorama of the United Arab Emirates to the Italian public.

Also due to the presence of an Emirates Pavilion at the Venice Art Biennale, inaugurated in 2014, it seemed appropriate to involve, on the Italian side, Elisabetta Barisoni, head of Ca’ Pesaro – International Gallery of Modern Art, and the artist Paola Angelini, a young painter from the Marche region who can boast artist residences in Venice, both in Ca’ Pesaro and in the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation.
On the Emirates side, Kevin Jones, art writer and educator (Dubai), and the Iraqi-Saudi calligraphy artist Majid Alyousef (Dubai) will participate.
Ida Zilio-Grandi, Director of the Italian Cultural Institute Abu Dhabi, will introduce and moderate the meeting.
Because of its location the monumental sculpture was the museum’s only art to suffer any damage. As renovations sponsored by Targa Telematics began on the ground floor, the sculpture was raised, cleaned and restored on site by venetian company Co.New Tech.

Work on Giacomo Manzù’s bronze begun by sampling and examining the sculpture with the aid of fluorescent analysis and X rays. Oxidation and corrosion phenomena were detected; deposits of sand, silt, and clay were identified on the surface that was submerged by water; and saline efflorescence was discovered on the rest of the surface. The repairs began at the end of February 2020, were suspended for approximately two months during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, and resumed in May. The renovation process on Manzù’s Cardinal was concluded at the end of August 2020.

Manzù started dedicating himself to the cardinal theme in the mid Thirties, struck by a visit to Saint Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. In 1939 at the third Quadrennial in Rome, Giacomo Manzù presented his first version of the subject, which was then revisited in later works and then displayed in his personal exhibition at the 1948 Biennial, and in the 1956 Biennial, where he unveiled fourteen bronze sculptures, among which two versions of the Cardinal. In this second occasion, the International Gallery of Modern Art’s acquisitions Commission for the venetian exposition decided to purchase the 1955 piece on show today at Ca’ Pesaro. The sculpture’s base is marked by the MAF artistic foundry in Milan, Italy.

Bizhan Bassiri, representative of the Republic of Iran at the 57th Venice International Biennale of Art in 2017, returns to the lagoon city with the monumental sculptural installation Meteorite Narvalo in the courtyard of Ca’ Pesaro – Galleria Internazionale d’Arte Moderna, to be inaugurated during in the week of the 2019 Biennale.

The ten-metre-high bronze colossus with its platinum tip is the expression of Bassiri’s own visceral, three-dimensional, atavistic conception of “magmatic thought” and the Manifesto of Magmatic Thought, which he formulated in Rome in the early 1980s. With particular reference to points 10 and 49 of the Manifesto, the artist states: “The existence of the work of art in the world is a meteorite arriving from the cosmos, it does not belong to the Earth but appears to it”. Meteorite Narvalo represents precisely this suspension between the terrestrial and celestial dimensions, and is the synthesis a wide-ranging repertoire of sculptures created over the years and evocative of the fall of meteorites as a phenomenon with metaphorical and poetic implications.

The inspiration for the project, begun in 2009, came after a visit to the Vesuvius crater in 1979, which led the Iranian artist to elaborate the distinction between the creative process of transforming matter and the volcanic activity of the planet. In doing so Bassiri wanted to reopen a dialogue with history and its universal language, and also with tradition seen as the transmission of an idea, an eternal epiphany through which truth can be accessed, a condicio sine qua non for artistic expression.

Meteorite Narvalo will therefore welcome visitors to Ca’ Pesaro in order to introduce them to the sublime, opening the doors to the ascent of the “treasure that emerges from the depths with ardour”, just as the sculpture does as it coils around itself and turns gold, aiming upward, towards the sky.

A collection of Italian modern art

8 February – 31 March 2019

_

From 8 February 2019, an exceptional nucleus of thirty two works by some of the most important exponents of Italian twentieth-century art will join the collections of Ca’ Pesaro – International Gallery of Modern Art. The artists in question are Massimo Campigli, Carlo Carrà, Giacomo Manzù, Ottone Rosai, Scipione and Mario Sironi.

The works come from well-known and prestigious Italian collections, including that of the writer and art promoter Margherita Sarfatti, of the publisher Pietro Vallecchi, of the art critic Raffaele Carrieri, of the lawyer and President of Brera Academy Rino Valdameri, of the engineer Alberto Della Ragione, of the lawyer Pietro Feroldi, of the entrepreneur Carlo Frua De Angeli, of the publisher and critic Giampiero Giani, of the trader Gianni Mattioli.

The works arriving today at Ca’ Pesaro on long- term loan from a private collection include a number of significant masterpieces, partially first presented in 1953 at Palazzo Strozzi in Florence, in an exhibition on Gianni Mattioli’s collection curated by Carlo Ludovico Ragghianti, partially in the inaugural show of the Galleria d’Arte Moderna of Turin in 1959 and eventually toured a number of American, Japanese and European museums between 1967 and 1972.

To welcome the visitor on this journey through Italian art between the two world wars, there are five works by Massimo Campigli, including such famous paintings as The Amazons, 1928, The Jailer’s Daughter, 1929 and Woman with Jewels, 1942, which was painted in Venice, to which the painter moved at the outbreak of war and which was displayed in the autumn of 1945 in a solo exhibition at the galleria del Cavallino.

The years of the ‘return to the order’ in Italian painting are then illustrated by some exceptional examples in terms of quality and compositional originality, realised in the early 1920s by Carlo Carrà. The aim was to do away with the fleeting moment and movement caught on canvas, an approach favoured not only by the Impressionists but also the Futurists, and with the rise of the modern and technological city in favour of the revival of a classical compositional form, but arranged in line with new vocabularies: balance, composure, measure, research into archetypal forms. A founder and master of Futurism, then protagonist of the return to order, Carrà now enters the Museum with five works, including Morning by the coast, of 1928, which establishes a virtual dialogue with the permanent collections of Ca’ Pesaro.

Five works by another Italian master, Ottone Rosai, now enter the Gallery. He was an exponent of the revival of synthesis, as Margherita Sarfatti defined it, and of a compositional essentiality that enjoyed great success in the European art scene between the two world wars.

A large room is dedicated to a fundamental artist for the development of Italian art, Mario Sironi. The group of eight Sironi pictures entering Ca’ Pesaro today includes a masterpiece of 1923-24 – The Drinker – formerly the property of Margherita Sarfatti. A second masterpiece by Sironi also dates from the 1920s – Pandora (The myth of Pandora), 1924 – which depicts a monumental figures of a woman in a rocky, uninhabited, almost primordial landscape.

Finally, a room shows forms of painting that reveal alternative and complementary approach to that of the Italian ‘return to order’: masterpieces by Gino Bonichi, called ‘Scipione’, with bright colours and perspective boldness typical of expressionist painting matured in the Roman scene. This was a school of art that rejected the fascist regime and also the realism of Italian twentieth century art and anticipated the post-war developments by making colour explode on the canvas and creating a new compositional balance. Likewise, the geometric and mural painting with which Sironi experimented between the 1940s and 1950s led to the art of the following decades and towards the disintegration of matter typical of the Informal school. The extraordinary collection closes with a small but fine selection of sculptures and drawings by Giacomo Manzù, one of the greatest exponents of figurative sculpture of the last century.

Venice, 9 – 16 September 2018

The international festival dedicated to the art of glass returns with more than 180 different events including exhibitions, guided tours, conferences, workshops, performances and educational activities.

Comune di Venezia, Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, Fondazione Cini/LE STANZE DEL VETRO, Istituto Veneto and Consorzio Promovetro Murano present the second edition of the festival that from 9th to 16th September will involve all the main institutions in the city, with several new additions.

From 9 to 16 September 2018, more than 150 participants, with a total of over 180 events across Venice, Mestre and Murano, will take part in the second edition of The Venice Glass Week, the major international festival dedicated to the art of glass, conceived to celebrate the artistic and economic resource for which Venice is famous around the world.

The event is promoted by the Town Council of Venice and conceived by three of Venice’s principal cultural institutions with considerable experience and expertise in the field of glass – Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, Fondazione Giorgio Cini and Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti – along with the most important trade association, the Consorzio Promovetro Murano, which also manages the Vetro Artistico® Murano trademark of the Veneto Region. This year’s edition has again attracted a large number of participants, with a 20% increase over the first year’s festival.

Hundreds of applications were originally submitted for review and selection by the curatorial committee that was introduced this year, chaired by the Venetian glass historian Rosa Barovier Mentasti, and including critics and curators Chiara Bertola and Jean Blanchaert, journalist and editor of the German magazine Neues Glas Uta Klotz, and chemist, university teacher and expert in the composition of glass materials Marco Verità. The high volume of applications, from foundations, art galleries, museums – among which we note the participation for the first time of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Palazzo Fortuny and Museo di Storia Naturale -, cultural institutions, universities and advanced education institutes, as well as glass furnaces, companies, artists and private Italian and foreign collectors, confirms the dynamism and vitality of Venice’s cultural scene, and provides a strong indication of the local and international interest in the field of glass.

The rich and expansive programme for The Venice Glass Week festival will involve varied and widespread events across the district, which this year also extends to the mainland, with Mestre now one of its main centres, along with Venice and Murano. The events, most with free entrance, will all have artistic glass as their main theme and be aimed at audiences of all ages: exhibitions, guided tours, conferences, seminars, prize-giving ceremonies, film screenings, educational activities, parties, drinks receptions, open studios and a non-competitive night-time race around the candle-lit streets, canals and glass-furnaces of Murano.

Giberto Arrivabene – Sleeping Putto, a glass sculpture
From 9 to 16 September 2018, 10am-6pm, closed on Mondays.

In its role as a decorative centrepiece, a tenderly posed marble putto with a particularly sweet expression has always kept watch over the Arrivabene family table. Inherited from the Papadopoli family, who were famous collectors, it is probably from the circle of Bartolomeo Ferrari (1780-1844). The little figure has now been replicated in Murano glass thanks to a complex lost-wax casting process previously tried and tested by Giberto Arrivabene with other sculptural masterpieces. The new version will be exhibited during The Venice Glass Week 2018 at Ca’ Pesaro in an intriguing dialogue with the museum’s collection.

Classic Timeless sculpture, the eternity of glass
Ca’ Pesaro – Galleria Internazionale d’Arte Moderna
13th September 2018, 5pm

Gabriella Belli, overall Director of the Venice Municipal Museums network, will talk in conversation with Adam Lowe, founder of FACTUM ARTE, a sector leader in the sphere of digital reproduction and facsimile creation, along with Giberto Arrivabene, glass designer, who has adapted the age-old techniques of lost-wax casting to create glass replicas of the masterpieces of the past. The question of historic and modern copying was also explored in a special project – A World of Fragile Parts – curated by the Victoria & Albert Museum, at the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale.

As part of the agreement signed in 2013, the Iuav University of Venice (Project Culture Department) and Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia (Ca’ Pesaro International Gallery of Modern Art) are presenting the public with a new cycle of events (conferences, seminars, debates, workshops, exhibitions) that are the fruit of collaboration between the two institutions with the aim of promoting communication between the arts and modern and contemporary architecture.

The Ca’ Pesaro Gallery will house the initiatives entitled Salotto Longhena in honour of the architect Baldassare Longhena (1598-1682), who built the magnificent palazzo on the Grand Canal that is now the home of the Museum.

The cycle will begin on 19 January 2016 (from 13.30 to 17.00) with a seminar organised by Renato Bocchi and Claudia Pirina called Spazio arte architettura. Sguardi iberici, with the participation of three important, famous architects who work in the Iberian peninsula: Carme Pinós, Fabrizio Barozzi and Jorge Ramos.

A Special Event of the Venice International Perfrmance Art Week

Thursday, December the 18th, 2014
Venice, Ca’Pesaro, International Gallery of Modern Art

At the VENICE INTERNATIONAL PERFORMANCE ART WEEK, Terry Smith continues working on his on-going multi-disciplinary project The Foundling.

Initially commissioned by Gill Hedley for the Foundling Museum’s contemporary art program, The Foundling is constructed in a series of individual and related sequences that have been developed through a series of live performances that have taken place over the last years. Using found images and sounds as well as deconstructed scores by Handel and Vivaldi, The Foundling plays with ideas of the hidden and the lost. In a year, which celebrates Baroque music this piece acknowledged the active contributions that Handel and Vivaldi both made to institutions in London and Venice respectively, dedicated to giving vulnerable and destitute children a second chance at life.

The Foundling is a collaborative project bringing together musicians, composers, sound designers and writers and cinematographers. Smith’s approach to these projects is an open collaborative process. Discussions, workshops, rehearsals and performances have enabled him to construct a work that is informed and determined by the different skills and ideas of the individuals involved.

The Foundling is a unique meeting of different art forms. Crucial in this collaboration is Ian Dearden, renowed composer and sound designer, Linda Hirst (vocalist), Oliver Coates (cello), Minguel Tantos (trombone), the cinematographer Jonathan Callery, and the actor Julian Bird, and contains special commissioned new texts by writer Mel Gooding.

Live Music Performance with:

Marita Isobel Solberg (Voice)
Giorgio de Battisti (Violin)
Mauro Sambo (Sax)
Samanta Cinquini, MIcaela Leonardi (Performer)

Coordinated by Jennifer Macmillan Johnson for Studio Contemporaneo.

March 8th. International women’s day
Women in art at Ca’ Pesaro

Saturday, 8th March 2014
Ca’ Pesaro, Venice

Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia will be participating in International women’s day with a tribute to the feminine world via an art-historical investigation dedicated to the depiction of women in art. The ideal venue will be Ca’ Pesaro, International Gallery of Modern Art, housing an extraordinary range of female portraits, providing an opportunity to embark on a voyage into the painting and sculpture of the 19th and 20th centuries and examine a highly interesting chapter in the history and transformation of the female ideal. The study will begin with a reflection on the wives and mothers shown in 19th-century portraits, will then touch on the mysterious Madame X by Medardo Rosso and then linger over Arturo Martini’s strongly expressive women before concluding with the brave partisan woman by Leoncillo, which is already part of the visual sculptural experience of the years after the Second World War.

TALKS.
A new layout for Ca’ Pesaro

From June 1st 2013
Ca’ Pesaro, International Gallery of Modern Art Venice

Within the framework of a historic vocation and renewed interest in modern and contemporary art, the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia has launched a major project to improve the Galleria Internazionale d’Arte Moderna at Ca’ Pesaro. The aim is to restore a dynamic structure to Venice that is open to contemporary work, with a particular focus on those activities of training, study, research and promotion that are integral parts of the specific mission of a civic museum.

The new layout, which will open in time for the 2013 Venice Art Biennale, will be inaugurated with the title Colloqui (‘Talks’), the intention being to recover those relational dynamics and elective affinities within the collections underlying the great contemporary history of Venice which, we should not forget, has in Ca’ Pesaro the first municipal collection of modern art to open in Italy, at the end of the 19th century (at the same time as the foundation of the Biennale).

The art of handwriting
CONTEMPORARY CALLIGRAPHY: A gesture of self-expression

3rd International Calligraphy Workshop in English and Italian

October 1st 2011 to October 8th 2011

This year, on the occasion of the 54th International Art Exhibition open from 6 June to 30 November 2011, the calligraphy course will be held in the International Gallery of Modern Art, Ca’ Pesaro, the foundation of which was directly connected to the birth and development of the Venice Art Biennale. Located on the third floor in the Palazzo, the Oriental Art Museum, also plays an important role in this course.

Handwriting will therefore mainly be analysed and practised as an image, emphasising its ability to communicate as a form, sign and gesture of the hand, and therefore of oneself, since it was thanks to art that it was rediscovered in the western world as a form of expression followed by the considerable development of its visual potential. By following the original forms of western letters and a comparison with Oriental art, a non-verbal sign will be developed that encompasses the alphabet, working with music, using both hands and experimenting with the different writings with a wide range of tools. Each participant will make a series of books of large dimensions, and also be responsible for the binding.

Teacher
Monica Dengo, calligrapher
